The rising tide of corporate scandals and audit failures has shocked the public, and the integrity of auditors is being increasingly questioned. It is crucial for auditors and regulators to understand the main causes of audit failure and devise preventive measures accordingly. This study analyzes enforcement actions issued by the China Securities Regulatory Commission against auditors in respect of fraudulent financial reporting committed by listed companies in China. We find that auditors are more likely to be sanctioned by the regulators (...) for failing to detect and report material misstatement frauds rather than disclosure frauds. Further analysis of the material misstatements indicates that auditors are more likely to be sanctioned for failing to detect and report revenue-related frauds rather than assets-related frauds. In sum, our results suggest that regulators believe auditors have the responsibility to detect and report frauds that are egregious, transaction-based, and related to accounting earnings. The results contribute to our knowledge of auditors’ responsibilities for detecting frauds as perceived by regulators. (shrink)

International health research in malaria-endemic settings may include screening for sickle cell disease, given the relationship between this important genetic condition and resistance to malaria, generating questions about whether and how findings should be disclosed. The literature on disclosing genetic findings in the context of research highlights the role of community consultation in understanding and balancing ethically important issues from participants’ perspectives, including social forms of benefit and harm, and the influence of access to care. This article addresses new approaches to the novel in the twenty-first century. It begins with an affirmation that even the most avant-garde of contemporary critics in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century share a commonality: a background in what was identified as “close reading” in the Anglo-American academic world and analyse de texte in French. After numerous declarations in recent decades about the death of the novel, the death of the author and the death of literary criticism, it is (...) evident that the novel as a genre has survived, authors remain a subject of study, and new approaches are possible. In addition, recent psychological research seems to pose serious challenges to traditional intuition-driven philosophical inquiry. The practice of making datasets publicly available for use by the wider scientific community has become firmly integrated in genomic science. One significant gap in literature around data sharing concerns how it impacts on scientists’ ability to preserve values and ethical standards that form an essential component of scientific collaborations. We conducted a qualitative sociological study examining the potential for harm to ethnic groups, and implications of such ethical concerns for data sharing. Análise diacrônica das contribuições históricas expressas nos artigos científicos de pesquisadores bolsistas de produtividade em pesquisa do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, para o debate embasado em Raymond Williams no campo da Ciência da Informação, mais especificamente no interdomínio relacionado aos aspectos culturais. Apresenta a concepção adotada como fundamento do estudo, investigando a influência de Williams para as pesquisas sobre cultura na área. Identifica a produção científica dos agentes que constituem o grupo de pesquisadores de produtividade em (...) Ciência da Informação, e que referenciaram Williams. Seleciona os artigos desses autores para verificar os temas presentes nessa produção e os periódicos científicos nos quais são publicados. Analisa essas contribuições, relacionando-as entre si e com as concepções presentes na literatura pertinente. O estudo permitiu identificar uma pequena parcela das publicações pesquisadas como citante de obras de Williams, porém é possível constatar que mais da metade dos artigos que trazem o autor como referência tratam sobre cultura. A pesquisa também demonstra a inclinação de dois pesquisadores em citar as obras de Raymond Williams, considerando suas publicações correspondem quase a metade do corpus da pesquisa. Foi possível observar que a publicação dos artigos analisados se encontra dispersa entre os diversos periódicos da área. (shrink)
